Pocahontas Administration
Principal's Message
Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year! We are so glad you have chosen to live in beautiful Powhatan County and attend our school! Powhatan is a community full of pride and love thanks to strong "family" connections and genuine care for one another. Joining our school means that you have over 770 new friends and 100 adults who will care and support you during your time at Pocahontas.
Our attendance zone covers most of the northern and western portions of the county, bordering the James River, Cumberland County, and Amelia County. We have a dynamic staff that is filled with Powhatan Pride. We show up when others need support, wear our black and orange routinely, and love our Pocahontas Family. We value each individual child, meet them where they are, and educate the whole child. We serve three sections of about 50 preschool students and about 720 students in grades kindergarten through fifth.
We communicate weekly with our families, keeping you up to date with important events at Pocahontas, school updates, and division news. Please take the time each week to listen and/or read the messages as they contain important information. The school's website is full of great information and our PTO Facebook page stays updated with current events. After reading and vocabulary development, communication is key to success at the elementary level. I encourage you to routinely check in with the teacher and take advantage of our online systems to monitor your child's progress. Your child's success is our success!
Personally, I love spending time with my family, playing games, doing yardwork, tinkering around the house, and staying outdoors. My children are 13, 11, and 7. My oldest son is in middle school and loves playing football, wrestling, hanging out with friends, and reading books about World War II. My 11-year-old daughter is entering middle school. She loves flowers, painting, dancing, and is always up to play a game. She is the cruise director of our family. My youngest son is 7 and is into Star Wars, Legos, and is the happiest playing with his Lego Storm Troopers. He has a knack for finding frogs and loves to play 20 Questions. He is the one that keeps our family guessing and we never know what he is going to say next! My wife is a library media specialist and when she is not reading childrens literature, you can find her researching my next house project.
I love to read and welcome any good recommendations. My favorite topics include making myself a better human such as learning skills, behavioral psychology, and improving my craft as a teacher/leader. On occasion, I change it up with fiction.
